Madonna and child with St. John the Baptist and two angels (Main title) Tommaso This painting, first attributed to Lorenzo di Credi, then to Verrocchio and Pierro di Cosimo, is now generally attributed to Tommaso, whose many tondo depictions of the Madonna and Child surrounded by saints and angels are well known.depicted in a landscape, the Madonna is seated on the ground, carrying the Child on her lap. Tommaso devised a symmetrical compositional scheme, which he reused on numerous occasions ("Madonna and Child between two angels", Dion, Musée des Beaux-arts and "Madonna and Child with little St. John and St. Margaret", Avignon, Musée du Petit Palais). The Virgin, in the center, is flanked by two angels. A devotional work, in which Christ's tragic fate is foretold by the mother's deeply sad gaze on her son, as well as by symbolic elements (cherries, goldfinch), this panel follows in the footsteps of Raphael's "Madonna Terranuova" (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie).
