Buddha and three Jakata: Mahakapi, Ruru, Shaabhamiga. Tibet, 18th century. Detrempe on canvas. On this thangka, three animal Jataka are represented. On the top right, in the Jataka of the Great Monkey (Mahakapi Jataka), while regaining over the Simiesque people, the future Buddha gives his life to save his congeneres. On the left side, in the form of a deer with a magnificent coat (Ruru Jataka), the future Buddha saves from drowning a king who hunted him. At the bottom right, in the Shaarabhamiga Jataka — as a fabulous animal, half lion, half cervid — the future Buddha pulls the man who hunted him from a precipice where he was falling.
