Image description

Artist Albert Nyfeler in his studio in Kittel painting wooden masks of Tschaeggaettae. The Tschaeggaettae in the Loetschental valley, Canton Valais, is a carnival custom. The young men of the valley wear masks made of Swiss stone pine, sheep or goat skins and cowbells and perform between 3 February and Gigis Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, they chased women and children and rubbed them with snow, undated recording around 1940.
