A young man shakes the branches of a tree making the May bugs fall to the ground, where women have assembled to pick up the insects, photographed in May of 1949, in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. The beds have been covered with sheets to protect the plants from the animals. The may bug, also called doodlebug or cockchafer, infested many regions and became a major pest during the years of mass flight in the middle of the 20th century.
