NOBEL CHEMISTRY PRIZE WINNER WALTER KOHN, 1998-10-13 (photo)

Professor Walter Kohn, of the University of California-Santa Barbara, takes congratulatory telephone calls in his home in Santa Barbara after learning that he has won the Nobel Chemistry prize October 13. Kohn, 75, was born in Vienna, Austria and has taught at U.S. institutions since 1950, and at Santa Barbara since 1979. Kohn shares the prize with John Pople of Northwestern University. Kohn was cited for the development of density-functional theory in the 1960s. It simplifies the mathematical description of the bonding between atoms that make up molecules. fsp/Photo by P.J. FSP/KM
