Newcastle artist John Storey's view of Prior's Haven beach at Tynemouth was painted from a sketch made in 1849, though the watercolour itself was completed much later. Wheeled tents known as bathing machines are lining the water's edge. There are also a couple of boating versions of these on the sea. These allowed people to swim in the sea without being seen by onlookers. The building with a huge chimney at the back of the beach is a factory of some kind.
