The Pomp of Pausanias. The Spartan general Pausanias, who had won Plataea for the Greeks, fancied that he was not appreciated at his true worth by his countrymen, and made secret overtures to the Persian king. These being favourably received, Pausanias gave way to his innate pride and insolence. He began to behave like an Oriental satrap, having a guard of Egyptian and Persian mercenaries, and insulting and ill-treating his Greek officers and soldiers. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
