John Falconar Slater painted many coastal scenes near his home at Whitley Bay, on the North East coast. His main subjects were sea compositions, but he also painted landscapes and other subjects, and was influenced by the work of the French Impressionists. In this image of the quayside at North Shields he has applied thick layers of oil paint with very vigorous brushmarks to describe the ripples of water on the river. This is also reflected in the way he has painted the sky, as the smoke from the fishing boat's funnel mingles with the clouds;
