Image description

‘The Town Batteries or Interior Fortifications of Sebastopol from the advanced paralell of Chapman's Attack, 23 June 1855’. Coloured tinted lithograph by R M Bryson, after William Simpson, 1855. One of 41 lithographs from 'The Seat of War in the East - Second Series, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, 27 August 1855, printed by Day and Son. The soldiers in the foreground are shown manning a Rifle Pit in the British Left attack, also know as Chapman’s Attack. Below them to the right, the Vorontsov road runs down to Sevastopol’s Dockyard Creek; the water’s edge is protected by the Russian Strand Battery. Atop the high ground to the right, the Barrack Battery is well-placed to sweep any attack made from this direction.
