Hippo, Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana (photo)

In the Okavango Delta inhabit lot of hippos, visible during the aquatic safari camp in Eagle Island Camp by Orient Express , outside the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. The common hippopotamus ( Hippopotamus amphibius ) is a large mammal primarily artiodactyl herbivore that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. It is coupled to the pygmy hippopotamus ( Choeropsis liberiensis ), one of only two current members of the family Hippopotamidae. It is a semi-aquatic animal that lives in rivers and lakes. During the day they remain in the water or mud , and both intercourse and childbirth happen in the water. At dusk become more active and out to graze on grass . While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water , grazing is a solitary activity , and are not territorial on land. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial ungulates, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales , porpoises , etc.). Photographed in 2013
