Image description

George IV sailed from Greenwich in London to start a short visit to Scotland in 1822. The royal barge is beside the quay in this scene. A group of raised oars mark where the rowers are sitting at the rear of the barge. The barge's decorated passenger compartment is behind them, where a soldier is keeping guard. The picture is one of Thomas Miles Richardson Senior's most outstanding w/cs. It was exhibited in Newcastle in 1826. Richardson painted only a few scenes outside his home area of the North East.
