Image description

Portrait of the artist in oriental costume (Main title) Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn) Rembrandt (1606-1669) often depicted biblical figures in luxurious oriental costumes. In this full-length self-portrait, he poses as an Oriental prince: feathered turban, satin tunic belted with a striped scarf embroidered with gold and precious stones, heavy velvet cloak. The gloved right hand rests nonchalantly on a cane, while the left rests on the hip. In the background on the left, a table with a number of metal objects, including a Roman helmet, reinforces the artificiality of the disguise. At the artist's feet is a barbet, which was used to hunt waterfowl because its thick coat protected it from the cold. The back of its body was shorn to prevent it from drowning in the marshes. X-rays have revealed that Rembrandt added this dog at a later date, to hide his legs, the position of which he seemed to dislike.Of the eighty self-portraits by Rembrandt in our possession, the one in the Petit Palais is the only one in which the artist depicted himself standing, which is what makes it so original. It was probably painted in Leiden in 1631, before the master left for Amsterdam. However, errors of proportion have sometimes called into question the attribution to Rembrandt. Signature and date - Signed and dated lower right: "Rembrandt.f...1631". Inventory number: PDUT925
