William Reid Clanny (1776-1850) was an Irishman who spent most of his working life as a doctor in Sunderland, where he was heavily involved in the fight against Cholera in the 1830s. He was also concerned with mine safety and invented a mining safety lamp used in local pits. The portrait was presented to Dr. Clanny by his fellow medical practitioners. Little is known about the artist John Reay, though he also painted a portrait of Grace Darling;
