Harlequin, 1928 (pencil & wash on paper)

In 1928 Ravilious was commissioned with Bawden to create murals for the Refreshment Room at Morley Working Men's College, London. After trialling some scenes of London, they eventually chose to depict fantasy scenes with theatrical associations, since the college was close to the Old Vic theatre. The murals were a great critical success, but this preliminary drawing is part of all that remains of the original work, as the murals were destroyed by wartime bombing. Ravilious went on to complete further murals with Tirzah for the Midland Railway Hotel, Morecambe, in 1933.
