Susanna Maria Noel, Mrs Thomas Hill (c.1760)

Arthur Pond (London 1701 – Rome 1758). Oil painting on canvas, Susanna Maria Noel, Mrs Thomas Hill (c.1760) by Arthur Pond (London 1701 – Rome 1758), circa 1755. A painted oval half-length portrait, almost in profile to the left. Her hair drawn back from her forehead, wearing a white satin bodice with pearl earrings, necklace and stomacher. The attribution and identification are based on a letter to Pond from Thomas Hill written in 1755. Susanna Maria Noel, Mrs Thomas Hill (d.1760) daughter of Judge Sir William Noel (1695-1762) and Elizabeth Trollope, third daughter of Sir Thomas Trollope, Bt. of Casewick, Leicestershire; married in 1740 as his second wife, Thomas Harwood (1693-1782) who assumed the name of Hill. They had four children: (1)Susanna Hill (1743-1761) (2)Maria Hill (1742-1813 who married (1) Sir Brian Broughton-Delves (d.1766) and (2) Henry Errington (3)Samuel Hill (1743-1766) (4)Noel Hill (1745-1789) created 1st Baron Berwick (the builder of Attingham who married in 1768 Anne Vernon (1744-1797) Attingham Park, Shropshire (Accredited Museum)
