Women's Liberation. When the Bastille was destroyed in 1789 during the French Revolution it signified that centuries of tradition could be swept away and new ideas adopted. Mary Wolstoncraft in her book 'The Vindication of the Rights of Women', published in 1792, then promoted the concept of female equality. But it has taken nearly two centuries of struggles to approach anything like that ideal: a struggle that was bitterly fought by the suffragettes as they defied authority and the law. Women of all classes contributed to the cause in education, medicine and industry - and the battle continues. Original artwork for illustration on p10 of Look and Learn issue no 1020 (26 September 1981). Lent for scanning by The Gallery of Illustration.
