This white rhino is the first to be reintroduced into Uganda from Kenya after almost all the population was wiped out by poachers during the civil war in 1970s. In 1989, parties to the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) voted to ban all international trade in ivory products, but the ivory trade still continues, especially in markets in southeast Asia and northern Yemen.
