Human Zoo in Nancy: the Senegalese village at the International Exhibition of the East at the beginning of the 20th century (May to November 1909) - members of an African tribe (African, black), - postcard of the period - Such exhibitions, veritable human zoos and itinerant fairground attraction were presented at the beginning of the 20th century in many cities of France and Europe. see also GUT6588, GUT7828 and GUT7829 - extract from the catalogue of the exhibition of Nancy 1909: “” installs in a vast enclosure at the corner of Rue de Graffigny and the main avenue of Parc Sainte-Marie, this exotic curiosite very well established by Messrs. Bouvier and Tournier includes an entire village of negres, representatives of the most Beautiful types of breeds Toucouleurs, Benga, Thiam and Yolofs (Wolof). About thirty squares covered with palm leaves are arranged for each family around the enclosure. A marabout serves both as a priest and teacher of school for the tribe, composed of about 100 negres under the direction of the great chief Mahmadou Seck.”
