The bridge across the Surkhab River, 1879. Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879. This view depicts the stone bridge across the Surkhab river. A tributary of the Kabul river, the Surhab rises in the Safed Koh mountains. In 1878 Burke accompanied the Peshawar Valley Field Force into Afghanistan as an unofficial photographer and remained there, photographing the soldiers, as well as the Afghan peoples and landscape, until the summer of 1880.
