Captured German A7V tank, taken by an unknown photographer in 1918, during World War One Introduced early in 1918, the A7V tank weighed 26 tons and had a top speed of 12km/h. It carried a crew of up to 18 men. The Germans were unconvinced of the fighting value of tanks, and only about twenty A7Vs were built by Daimler-Benz. This photograph is from an album called 'Official Australian War Photographs', produced by the Australian War Records Section which was established by the British government in 1917. The British government in World War One recognised the importance of photographs, both as propaganda and as historical records, and tried to avoid the crude jingoism of the earlier Boer War propaganda. ©SSPL/NMeM/Kodak Collection
