Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott (1832-97) land agent of Lord Erne in County Mayo. He opposed the Land League in its demand for rent reductions, and was one of the earliest victims of the polivy, first advocated bu John Dillon in 1879. The local people refused to work for him. Boycott's crops were saved by a work force of fifty Orangemen, who were escorted by over one thousand troops during the two weeks it took to bring in the harvest. The Boycott Relief Expedition cost the government £10,000. On 13th December 1880 the Daily Mail described the new tactic of the Land League as 'boycott', immortalising the Captain. The photo dates from Boycott's participation with various English political leaders in a shoot at Hampstead, near London.
