Image description

German Hans Staden (c. 1525-79) travelled with a Portuguese expedition to South America where he was captured by the Tupinambá people of Brazil while on a hunting expedition from the fort at Saint Maro. He was taken to their settlement but managed to escape and wrote an account, claiming his captors practiced cannibalism. Theodor de Bry produced engravings of Staden's story for Grand Voyages to America (1593) vol 3
