Image description

The Regent's Canal was probably the most significant work of James Morgan (1774-1856), architect and canal engineer. Regent's Canal, opened in 1820, is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) long and provides a link from the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames in London. In 1929 the Regent's Canal Company purchased the Grand Junction and Warwick Canals, merging the three waterways to create the Grand Union Canal Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864) was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings. Shepherd's work, mostly topographical, is characterized by an attention to detail, along with lifelike scenes that contained people, carriages and horses. Engraved by Frederick James Havell (1801-1840/1) and published 25 August 1827 by Jones & Co. 3 Acton Place, Kingsland Road, London. Published in Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century by the architect and civil engineer James Elmes (1782-1862). Dedicated to Colonel Drinkwater (1762-1844), who played a critical role in managing the financial crises of the company in the second half of the decade ending 1820. In 1830 he published A Compendium of the Regent's Canal, showing its connection with the metropolis.
