Olympia is a religious center of Greece, in the Peloponnese, more precisely in a small plain of Elide, on the right bank of the Alpheus and at the foot of Mount Cronion, and very close to the small modern city of Olympia, about 18 km from the city of Pyrgos and the Ionian Sea. The Heraion, the temple of Hera, also originally used for the worship of Zeus, is probably the first Doric building known from the Peloponnese. It dates from around 600 BC. It is said to have been built on the initiative of the inhabitants of Scillonte, a city neighboring and an ally of Pisa.
