What is the origin of saluting? This form of compliment, or sign of respect, is now largely confined to the fighting forces, but it was practised far more frequently in earlier times. Undoubtedly it originated when it was necessary for strangers to prove they were unarmed and defenceless, and the arm was raised open palm outwards as a proof that no weapon was concealed. Salutations extended to prostration, bowing, kneeling, and the curtesy, and certain ceremonies still linger on. The grasping of hands, "the right hand of fellow-ship", and the Chinaman shaking hands with himself, may be mentioned.
