Image description

The subject of this drawing is taken from Virgil's Aeneid. Dido, the legendary daughter of a king of Tyre, has fled to Carthage and there meets and falls in love with Aeneas, but is deserted by him. She is seen here in the act of throwing herself on his sword as the Trojan ships set sail. The armour on the pedestal belongs to the faithless Aeneas. A date before 1524 has been suggested on stylistic grounds.
