Image description

Portrait of Jan Caspar Gevaerts, called Gevartius (1593-1666), Secretary of the City of Antwerp, painted in grisaille, half-length, head turned to the left, in a dark doublet with a white lace collar, a loose cloak, holding a book in his left hand. Engraved by P. Pontius and Baills. From a set of grisaille portraits by Van Dyck of artists and distinguished persons, for engravers to work from. The panels, with the exception of M.188, are all in identical English 18th Century carved and gilded Palladian frames, with tongue-and-leaf outer edge and foliate sight edge.
