Napoleon BONAPARTE (15 August 1769 - 5 May 1821) in Italy. On June 14, 1800 Napoleon brought back to Spinetta Marengo (AL) a victory over General von Melas's Austrians, decisive for the progress of the second Italian campaign. The battle of Marengo began under bad auspices for the French, attacked by surprise by the enemy, but the arrival in the afternoon of the reinforcements led by General Louis Desaix (17 August 1768 - 14 June 1800) turned the tide of the clash, which was also lethal for the general himself, fatally wounded. Engraving by Antonio Bonamore (1845-1907), from “Napoleon's Story” by Jacques De Norvins (18 June 1769 - 30 July 1854), Edoardo Sonzogno publisher, Milan 1893
