King Charles II established the Royal Hospital in 1681 to care for old and injured soldiers. The building commission was was given to Sir Christopher Wren and work was completed in 1692.
Over the years the conditions for eligibility have changed but in pensioners are those who live at the Royal Hospital while, historically, out pensioners were those who lodged outside but visited it twice a year to collect their pensions. This was because the Royal Hospital acted as the administrative centre for army pensions and was run as a garrison until the mid-19th century.
