Image description

‘Funeral Cortege of Lord Raglan leaving Head Quarters’, 1855. Coloured tinted lithograph, 1855. One of 41 lithographs from 'The Seat of War in the East - Second Series', after William Simpson. Published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, 27 August 1855. Printed by Day and Son. Raglan died on 28 June 1855 shortly after the failure of the first attack on the Great Redan at Sebastopol. His coffin was draped with a Union Flag, upon which was placed his plumed hat and sword as well as a garland of immortelles, put there by General Pélissier, his French counterpart. Pélissier, ordinarily considered a brutal man, was strangely affected by Raglan’s passing and wept copiously at his deathbed.
