Opium pipe, 1860 circa.
This pipe was acquired by Private Blagden Russell, 1st Battalion The Military Train, during 2nd China War (1860). China had millions of opium addicts, many of whom were supplied by illegal British imports of Bengali opium which was regarded as higher quality than the home grow Chinese product. British desire to legalise the opium trade was one of the reasons for the conflict.
