Risaldar, Madras Army, 1840 circa. Gouache on mica painting by a Company artist, Trichinopoly, 1840 circa. One of 12 single figure uniform studies of soldiers of the Madras Army in a booklet of 12 paintings, 1840 circa. This set of paintings shows different ranks of the infantry, cavalry and artillery. It was probably commissioned by a British officer who was associated with the Madras Army. A risaldar was a native Indian officer of cavalry.
