Image description

Mark I tank and infantry, 1916. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916. Heavily loaded British infantry advance alongside a Mark I tank across the desolate waste of no-man’s-land. The tank is fitted with wire mesh to deflect enemy grenades and a steering tail at the rear. This latter feature was removed from subsequent models of this tank. From an album compiled by Lord Henry Seymour Rawlinson while Commander in Chief in India.
