Image description

This is one of Renoir’s final paintings, made in his house on the Mediterranean coast. Its theme was one he often used during his last years. He had become disillusioned with modern Parisian subjects like the theatre, and preferred to paint idealised images of women, often washing or dressing themselves. In this, Renoir placed himself in the great tradition of European figure painting, alongside Titian and Rubens, as well as the eighteenth-century French painters he had always admired.
