Image description

The image shows a bank of the lake in the foreground with a steep bend in the bank, creating a wide body of water in front of the hill that the temple sits on. At the base of the hill are a few people on a path and foliage that extends to the top of the hill. The Temple of Apollo is in a clearing at the apex and is a circular building on a plinth with eight steps, built in 1765. The design is based on a temple in Wood's Ruins of Baalbec, which was published in 1757. The temple is surrounded by corinthian columns that support scalloped mouldings and a domed roof. Each bay sround the temple has a niche with circular oculus which had lead statues that were moved to the house in 1903-04. The house and grounds are now cared for by the National Trust.
