On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "No.2 S. Barnabas' Square. No. 1 S. Barnabas' Square stood on the site of the Customs house of today. At first a private dwelling, it later was used as a Police Station & lock-up, the latter replacing, doubtless, the draughty cavernous area under the Old Court House where the Imperial Hotel stood, & stands. (S.P.Co. Offices) today. Temporary accommodation for delinquents prior to a stay in Castle Rushen. Later the 1 S. B. Square premises were occupied by the early Town Commissioners, & later still the present Customs House building was erected for that august body on the site of the old No.1 dwelling house. And the entrance thereto was from the Square. The walled-up entrance is still clearly visible, & about eight feet from the wall, there is a depressed space in the cobbles, beneath which is doubtless the cellar that served as the lock-up at that time. I have spoken to old folk in the vicinity still, that had, when children, lifted the cover lid _& scrambled into it, & once in, had to be retrieved by their 'agonised parents'. It was also the Record Office on Woods' Map 1834."
