Where They Crucified Him, 1862 (oil on canvas)

This scene illustrates one of the most important events related in the Bible, the crucifixion of Christ. The painting is set just outside Jerusalem in the afternoon following Christ's death. A man, possibly John Zebedee, is rolling up the placard nailed above Jesus' head by Roman soldiers. The London artist Philip Morris was one of many artists influenced by the techniques used by the Pre-Raphaelite group of artists. In this picture, he has used clear, bright colours over a white base layer of paint. This reflects light back through the colours, increasing their intensity;
