This important landscape was one of the first pictures that the French artist Paul Gauguin painted in Pont Aven, on the coast of Brittany in France. The small village attracted artists due to the picturesque dress and folk customs of the Breton people. The picture was painted at a turning point in Gauguin's work. Some areas are painted in the Impressionist-influenced dabs of paint he used early in his career. In other places he has used flat areas of colour, which are characteristic of the Post-Impressionist style he developed later;
