Image description

Depiction of 'Le Flesselles' balloon used by Joseph Montgolfier for his ascent from Lyon in 1784. Despite extreme weather conditions complicating the flight, the balloon landed safely in front of thousands of spectators outside Lyon. The text explains in detail the troubles experienced during the flight. The Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel (1740–1810) and Jacques-Étienne (1745–99), paper manufacturers from Annonay, are better known as aviation pioneers and inventors of the Montgolfière-style hot air balloon, globe aérostatique.
