Barry Douglas, pianist with Maria Curcio, his teacher. Barry Douglas OBE, solo pianist and conductor. Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2002 New Year's Honours List. He established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, Moscow. Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival. Is recording the complete works for solo piano of Brahms and Schubert with Chandos Records. Barry founded Camerata Ireland in 1999 to celebrate and nurture the cream of young Irish talent. Maria Curcio, (born in Naples, Italy 1918 or 1919 died 30 March 2009) was an Italian classical pianist who became renowned as a greatly influential and sought-after teacher. Her students included Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Dame Mitsuko Uchida, Myung-whun Chung, Leon Fleisher and Geoffrey Tozer. She was the last student of Artur Schnabel and she passed on his teachings to her own students.
