Headpiece of a Wall Almanac, woodcut by Urs Graf, 1519. Shows, left to right: Saint Damian examining the urine of a patient; a sectioned human figure and signs of the zodiac (ruling signs for each body part); Saint Cosmas administering medicine with a spatula. Damian and Cosmas were venerated in the Middle Ages as the patron saints of doctors and apothecaries. The almanac on which they appear would have offered medical advice, religious instruction and astrological lore. From Urs Graf by Major and Gradmann, London, 1942/1947
