Edwards competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, where he was one of a number of black athletes, to compete before the Hitler regime. Phil's nickname was 'Man of Bronze' due to the amount of bronze medals he had won over his career.
