Charles Grant (1746-1823), Painted c.1890 from an original portrait of 1819 Full-length seated figure facing half-right. Grant is seated in a red armchair, his right hand resting on the arm, his left on a red covered table on which lie papers, an ink-well and quill. He wears a black suit, white stock and his hair is white. A red curtain is draped on the top left-hand side. Charles Grant went to India 1767-71, as a private trader. He served in the Company's Bengal cadre 1772-90. After retirement he became an MP in 1802, a Director of the East India Company 1794-1803; Chairman 1805-06, 1809-10 and 1815-16. He was prominent in the Company's opposition to the policy of Marquess Wellesley; was a staunch supporter of missionary and educational work in India, and played a leading part in the establishment of Haileybury College.
