Image description

Three Hindu necromancers praying at the tomb of the murdered French artist Adolphe Steinheil. Steinheil was murdered in his home in Paris on 31 May 1908. His wife Marguerite was found tied up and gagged in bed. She claimed that she had been tied up by four strangers dressed in black robes. The police suspected Marguerite of the murders and she was arrested and detained in St Lazare Prison, but was acquitted after a sensational trial in November 1909. Pour retrouver les assassins. Trois necromants Indous en priere sur la tombe du peintre Steinheil. Illustration for Le Petit Parisien, 11 April 1909.
