A New Survey of the West Indies being a Journal of Three thousand and Three hundred Miles within the main Land of America by Thos. Gage the only Protestant that was ever known to have travel'd to those Parts. Thomas Gage (c. 1597–1656) : His voyage from Spain to S John de Ulbua and thence to Mexico; Guatemala return through Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Porto bello, Cartagena, Havana. He spent twelve years in Mexico and Guatemala as a Dominican friar. In 1642 abandoned the Catholic church for a Puritanical form of Anglicanism.
