The giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ) is a species of artiodactyl mammal of the African Giraffe family in Africa itself . It is the highest of all living species of land animals. The top of the head can be reach 5.8 m in height and can weigh from 750 kg to 1.6 tonnes. The common name ' giraffe ' and the first binomial name comes from the Arabic Giraffa ( ziraafa or zurapha ), meaning " high ". The second term gives the species name camelopardalis comes from Greek and Latin camelopardale camelopardalis , meaning " camel leopard ". The giraffe is related to deer and cattle, but belongs to another family, the jiráfidos ( Giraffidae ) comprising only the giraffe and its closest relative, the okapi. Photographed in 2013
