Image description

French School. Oil painting on panel, Called Queen Henrietta Maria (1609–1669), French School, 18th century. A half-length portrait of a young woman looking out to the left wearing a red dress with lace collar and pearl earrings and head-dress. . Inscribed on reverse of panel 'Henrietta Maria by Peter Liley'. Typed label on reverse 'It is certain that this painting represents Queen Henrietta Maria; it is equally certain that, despite the inscription, it is not the work of Sir Peter Lely. Mr J.W. Goodison dates it between 1630-40 and suggests that it might be the work of a Dutch painter working in England at that time. I bought it at the sale of the contents of Heydon Hall, Norfolk in July 1949. RWKC'. Felbrigg, Norfolk (Accredited Museum)
