William Aikman (Forfar 1682 – London 1731). Oil painting on canvas, Sir William Harbord MP KB (?1696-1770) by William Aikman (Forfar 1682 – London 1731), 1729. A full-length portrait, standing, wearing a full grey wig. Red skirted coat buttoned full length, white shirt and cravat, grey stockings, black shoes with silver buckles. Black hat tucked under left arm. Left hand in grey silk glove and holding other glove. Right hand tucked into coat. Standing in front of a stone parapet with large urn, landscape in background. Brother-in-law of Sir John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire. He assumed name and arms of his uncle Harbord Harbord in 1742, the year in which he began Gunton Hall, where there is a later portrait in a similar frame. 1955 inventory identified as Earl of Chesterfield.
