Image description

circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). Oil painting on canvas, Anne Brownlow, Lady Cust (1694-1779) by an artist in the circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the right, head turned to the left, wearing a simple brown dress fastened with a jewel at the breast. Anne Brownlow, Lady Cust (1694-1779) was the daughter of Sir William Brownlow 4th Bt (1665-1702) and Dorothy Mason (1655?-1699-1700); married in 1717, Sir Richard Cust, 2nd Bt (1680-1734) 2nd Bt of Pinchbeck, and sister of Sir John Brownlow, Viscount Tyrconnel (1690-1754). Mother of Sir John Cust (1718-70), Speaker of the House of Commons. 45 years a widow, she devoted herself to her large family. Inheriting Belton in 1754, she made over her own house in Grantham (also NT) to her son, Sir John, but exchanged with him again in 1766, so that he should have a house befitting his dignity as Speaker.
