Margaret Gambier, Lady Barham (d.1792). Oil painting on canvas (oval), Mary Gambier, Mrs Samuel Pitchford Cornish (b.1753) as a Girl by Margaret Gambier, Lady Barham (d.1792). An oval head-and-shoulders portrait of the sitter as a young girl, turned slightly towards the right and looking out at the spectator. Her light brown hair is dressed around the top with a blue ribbon and her hair falls in curls to her shoulders. She wears a yellow dress with a white muslin overlay. The portrait was painted by the sitter's aunt, Margaret Gambier, Lady Barham. The sitter's husband, Samuel Cornish, who had changed his name from Pitchford to Pitchford Cornish, was Vice Admiral of the Red in the Royal Navy, one of the highest ranks an Admiral could attain. Daughter of John Gambier (1723-1782), Lieut-Governor of the Bahamas and sister of Cornish Gambier. Married Samuel Pitchford Cornish (1739-1816), Admiral of the Red.
